Encapsulated Horizon
A downloadable Simulation for Windows
In an era dominated by digital technologies, understanding our world involves adopting systemic approaches to recreate and simulate the processes shaping it. The traditional dichotomies between rural and urban, natural, and artificial are undergoing profound transformations, mirroring shifts in culture and social conventions that dictate artistic landscape creation. Against the backdrop of contemporary planetary consciousness, particularly in the Anthropocene era, where human-induced changes impact the planet significantly, scholars and artists are increasingly incorporating drastic environmental changes into their work (Barringer, 2018). "Exploring the Digital Horizon" is an Arts-based research proposal that aims to delve into the evolution and corruption of the landscape, questioning the limits of the digital medium and humanity's impacts on the finite resources of the world through an animation-centric lens.
The project's focal point is the creation of an animated narrative titled "Encapsulated Horizon", envisioning a digital artwork that takes the landscape as the center focus. The narrative unfolds around a dynamic, ever-evolving entity – an amalgamation of industrial and urban structures, that grows and adapts, expanding to consume its surroundings. The way it expands is very similar to an organism, whose tentacle-like legs, made with pipes and trusses, inhale the natural elements, such as trees and even hills. In these natural elements place, an uncharacterized urban landscape appears, barren of meaning and life. The storyline explores the relationship between nature, urbanization, and the evolving role of humanity in shaping these environments. One could question whether the creaturelike structure does become a character, and if the work that aims to bring focus to the landscape ends up placing it in a new character.
